The black book

 Ian Rankin

1993, 9781398708778

Via the yoga girls.

Enjoyable read, and I preferred this to 'Rather be the devil', maybe because there is more character development. This is a much earlier Rebus story, the 5th in the series, where Siobhan Clarke has just joined the team.
When a close colleague is brutally attacked, Inspector John Rebus is drawn into an old case of a fire in the Central Hotel, an unidentified body, and a long forgotten night of terror and murder, which of course ends up linking to current events and Big Ger.
Rebus' brother Michael appears, trying to make a clean break after time in prison.
Lots of puns particularly with the Elvis themed restaurant, Heartbreak Cafe, which apparently was inspired by a less salubrious place Rankin visited during his stay in the States after winning the Chandler-Fulbright Fellowship in Detective Fiction.
